Bengtsson, Gustaf: Symphony No. 1 and other pieces

1008

CDS 1008-2 Gustaf Bengtsson (1886-1965): Symphony No. 1 in C minor; Vettern, Symphonic Suite & I Vadstena kloster, Suite. Gävle Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mats Liljefors.

The symphonic poem Vettern is absolutely gorgeous! Undoubtedly here is a real gem, a Swedish Vltava, with the same kind of sweeping, blazing beauty. The symphony is classically brief and poignant, and we also hear the very idyllic, sweet-sounding orchestral suite I Vadstena Kloster.

Bengtsson's Wagnerian late-romantic music here receives not only justice but convinced advocacy. As with all these Sterling enterprises Bo Hyttner's creative judgement is spot on. - MusicWeb
